3 Days and 3 Nights

But He replied to them, An evil and adulterous generation (a generation morally unfaithful to God) seeks and demands a sign; but no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.

For even as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it; for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, Someone more and greater than Jonah is here!

Matthew 12:39-41 AMPC

I just want to briefly examine the possible counting of the 3 days (Yom) and 3 nights of Jesus’s death and Resurrection

Working backwards and then forward,

And when the Sabbath was past [that is, after the sun had set], Mary Magdalene, and Mary [the mother] of James, and Salome purchased sweet-smelling spices, so that they might go and anoint [Jesus’ body].

And very early on the first day of the week they came to the tomb; [by then] the sun had risen.

Mark 16:1-2

Jewish Sabbath occurs from Friday sundown to Saturday sundown

The first day of the week is Sunday on the Georgian Calendar , for explanation purposes.

That year that week that day when Jesus was crucified also coincided with the feast of the unleavened bread in that year , 32 AD .

That would meant that Jesus had the passover meal with the disciples on Tuesday night

The Passover , Peschah meal would consist of a lamb bone, unbroken , bitter herbs and unleavened bread. (Exodus 12:5-10 , Exodus 12:39 , Exodus 13:3 )

Up till the time of Ezra , after the Babylonian Captivity , the Jews were still celebrating Passover , ( Ezra 6:22 )

On Tuesday night , He was arrested , and on Wednesday early morning ,there was an illegal trial.

Jesus was hastily chained , abused , horrendously whipped , that His appearance was no beauty . (Isaiah 53)

Now on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been removed from (lifted out of the groove across the entrance of) the tomb.

So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, whom Jesus [tenderly] loved, and said to them, They have taken away the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid Him!

John 20:1-2 AMPC

First day of the week is Yom Rishon , (Sunday)

Very early in the morning, Mary Magdalene came, and found an empty tomb.

Jesus was already resurrected , may I add on Sabbath (By Saturday sunset)

31 Since it was the day of Preparation, in order to prevent the bodies from hanging on the cross on the Sabbath—for that Sabbath(First day of the feast of the unleavened bread)  was a very solemn and important one—the Jews requested Pilate to have the legs broken and the bodies taken away.

36 For these things took place, that the Scripture might be fulfilled (verified, carried out), Not one of His bones shall be broken;

37 And again another Scripture says, They shall look on Him Whom they have pierced.

38 And after this, Joseph of Arimathea—a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews—asked Pilate to let him take away the body of Jesus. And Pilate granted him permission. So he came and took away His body.

39 And Nicodemus also, who first had come to Jesus by night, came bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, [weighing] about a hundred pounds.

40 So they took Jesus’ body and bound it in linen cloths with the spices (aromatics), as is the Jews’ customary way to prepare for burial.

41 Now there was a garden in the place where He was crucified, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever [yet] been laid.

42 So there, because of the Jewish day of Preparation [and] since the tomb was near by, they laid Jesus.

John 19:31, 36-42

The above events described would be Wednesday night, when Jesus was placed inside the tomb

45 Now from the sixth hour (noon) there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour (three o’clock).

46 And about the ninth hour (three o’clock) Jesus cried with a loud voice, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?—that is, My God, My God, why have You abandoned Me [leaving Me [l]helpless, forsaking and failing Me in My need]?

Matthew 27:45-46

Jesus’s death occurs around 3 pm , with none of His bones broken , on a Wednesday ,  ( Yom Revi ) , in order to fulfil the sign of three days and three nights

57 When it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who also was a disciple of Jesus.

58 He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him.

59 And Joseph took the body and rolled it up in a clean linen cloth used for swathing dead bodies

60 And laid it in his own fresh (undefiled) tomb, which he had hewn in the rock; and he rolled a big boulder over the door of the tomb and went away.

Matthew 27:57-60 AMPC

Wednesday was the first night , inside the tomb , it was done quickly in less than 3 hours

Thursday day , dead for the first day

Thursday night , dead for the second night

Friday day , dead for the second day

Friday night , dead for the third night ,

Sabbath day , dead for the third day , and resurrected!!!

Sunday , early dawn , could not find Jesus inside the tomb.

The mathematics would work out to be 3 full days and 3 full nights.

Exactly as written.

3 For I passed on to you first of all what I also had received, that Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed One) died for our sins in accordance with [what] the Scriptures [foretold],

That He was buried, that He arose on the third day as the Scriptures foretold,

And [also] that He appeared to Cephas (Peter), then to the Twelve.

1 Corinthians 15:3-5 AMPC

He is Risen.

For your considerations and Bible studies.
